Overview
Palmitic Acid also known as Hexadecanoic Acid, is a sixteen-carbon chain saturated fatty acid.
It is the most common saturated fatty acid found in animals and plants.
As its name indicates, Palmitic Acid is a major component of the oil from palm trees (palm oil, palm kernel, and palm kernel oil).
It can also be found in meats, cheeses, butter, and dairy products.
It is an odourless white crystalline solid which is insoluble in water.
Uses of Palmitic Acid
- Palmitic Acid is most often used to manufacture detergents, soaps and cleaning products.
- It is widely used to add texture to processed foods such as ready-to-eat foods, frozen foods, shelf-stable products, and prepared mixes such as cake mix.
- It is used to manufacture cetyl alcohol, which is used to produce detergents and cosmetics.
- It is used in beauty products and cosmetics for a variety of its properties such as a fragrance ingredient, opacifying agent, surfactant, cleansing agent, emulsifying agent, thickening agent, gelling agent, stabilizer and emollient.
- Retinyl palmitate, or vitamin A palmitate, is the ester of retinol (vitamin A) and palmitic acid, is a vitamin A supplement.
