Overview
Arachidic acid which is also known as eicosanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid with a long carbon chain of 20 atoms.
Arachidic acid occurs in small amounts in fish oil and a wide range of vegetable fats such as peanut oil, cocoa butter, cupuaçu butter, and corn oil.
It can also be formed by hydrogenation of Arachidonic Acid.
Unlike unsaturated fatty acids, arachidic acid does not have a double bond to prevent the formation of a crystal matrix. Which is why, it is a white crystalline solid at room temperature.
Uses of Arachidic acid
- Arachidic acid has good surfactant properties, which is why it is used in the manufacture of soaps, detergents, pharmaceuticals, and food packaging.
- It is used in manufacture of lubricants and lubricant additives.
- It is used as an opacifying agent, emollient, surfactant and emulsifying agent in the cosmetic industry.
- It is used in making quaternary ammonium products for detergents and biocides.
